May 17, 2019 – Brockville, ON – On May 17, Jim Cooper, Chair of Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Board of Directors welcomed Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure, and Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to celebrate the Hospital’s Phase 2 Redevelopment Project.

The event celebrated the Hospital’s new addition reaching its full height, or topping off. This comes just 14 months after the initial groundbreaking.

“This project brings growth and opportunity for our hospital and community,” said Cooper.

The five-storey, 175,000 square foot addition will see the transfer of services from BGH’s Garden Street site to a single campus at the Charles Street site.  The new tower includes an emphasis on patient spaces including the latest hospital design, and environmentally friendly building components.  The project will see an increase of 22 new beds. Programs located in the new tower will include Inpatient Mental Health, Complex Continuing Care, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Restorative Care.

Cooper also shared that its people are the heart of the Hospital. “We couldn’t be one of the most efficient hospitals in Ontario without the professionalism and teamwork of our doctors, nurses, technicians and support teams. We rely on our system partners, like the primary care teams, regional hospitals and community agencies. We have the ability to achieve excellence together.”

To support the expansion the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, the Hospital’s fundraising partner, has dedicated over $10 million thanks to the community’s generosity. The City of Brockville has committed over $4.7 million dollars for the project and the United Counties of Leeds Grenville contributing $2.125 million over 10 years.

The new tower is expected to be opened for patient care in spring 2020. The Hospital’s Garden Street site will be returned to its owners, the Sisters of Providence.

About BGH’s Redevelopment Project

Brockville General Hospital (BGH) provides a wide variety of services from Emergent Care to Rehab, Complex Continuing Care and several outpatient and community programs. BGH currently operates on four sites: Charles Street, Garden Street, Front Avenue and Strowger Boulevard. One of the primary objectives for the Phase 2 Redevelopment Project is to consolidate the Garden Street site services to the main Charles Street site.

The project, under development by EllisDon, will see the construction of a five-storey addition of approximately 175,000 square feet and approximately 20,000 square feet of renovations. The new addition will accommodate 29 Mental Health beds in the Acute Mental Health and Addictions Program; 32 Complex Continuing Care (including Palliative Care) beds; 32 Rehabilitation and Restorative care beds. The changes result in a net increase from 71 to 93 beds; an expansion of 22 beds.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working closely with BGH to redevelop the Hospital, which will remain publicly owned and controlled.

Quotes

“Brockville General Hospital’s expansion and renovation projects will help create more capacity, reduce wait times and end hallway health care for patients and families in the Thousand Island region. When completed, the new patient tower will add 22 new hospital beds with more private room options in a state-of-the-art facility. Projects like these are part of our government’s plan to modernize Ontario’s public health care system and end hallway health care.” – Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care

“The redevelopment of the Brockville General Hospital will bring relief for families here in Ontario. Today, we are one step closer to ending hallway health care. We are protecting what matters most by making smart infrastructure investments.” - Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure

“This is the largest public infrastructure investment in Brockville’s history and is exciting news for the Thousand Islands region. Brockville General Hospital is a cherished and vital institution in our community. We’re making this investment to ensure our frontline health-care providers have the facilities they need to continue providing excellent quality care to patients well into the future.” - Steve Clark, MPP, Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes

“Infrastructure Ontario is proud to celebrate the construction peak of the largest public infrastructure project in Brockville's history. This milestone is a testament to what good partnerships can achieve.” - Ehren Cory, President and CEO, Infrastructure Ontario

“EllisDon is proud of this great milestone and to be entering the next phase of the project. Our people take great pride in our communities and we are honoured to help provide patients and families with better and faster access to a wide-range of healthcare services and programs once the project is complete.”- Wayne Ferguson, Sr. Vice-President & Area Manager, EllisDon Ottawa
