Opening of the Donald B. Green Tower at Brockville General Hospital
On behalf of Brockville General Hospital and our community, it gives us great pleasure to celebrate the safe and successful move of patients from the Garden Street site to the Donald B. Green Tower at our Charles Street campus.
We share our deep gratitude to the 39 individuals - our patients - who participated in the move. Patients are the heart of this project and our hospital. We dedicate this historical day to each of them.
The move began, just after patient breakfasts were finished at the Garden Street site. After a timed 3.5-minute drive from Garden Street, patients were safely settled into their new, modern rooms. The last patient arrived just before lunch, which was freshly prepared in the ground floor kitchen.
Over the coming days and weeks, we hope all of the people receiving care in our Inpatient Rehabilitation, Integrated Stroke Unit, Complex Medical Management and Palliative Care programs are able to take in the many details of the tower that were designed to enhance their health, comfort, and well-being. Our level 2 and 3 outdoor terraces overlook the beauty of our region, and will be welcome spaces for fresh air and therapeutic care. Private bedrooms and a family lounge with kitchenette provide increased comfort to the patients and families using our Palliative Care services.
The completion of the Donald B. Green Tower would not be possible without investments from the Province of Ontario, City of Brockville, United Counties of Leeds Grenville, area municipalities, Brockville and District Hospital Foundation and their many, many generous donors. The vision of our community and donors ensures that we have the best healthcare facilities available for our community, now and for future generations.
During construction, because of bedrock blasting and large machinery, BGH was sometimes called the ‘noisy neighbour.’ We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our closest neighbours, including Commonwealth Public School, Kampus Kids, and Barclay Funeral Home. We are thankful to Brockville Collegiate Institute and Canadian Milk Manufacturing for supporting our staff during construction of our parking lots.
Opening the Donald B. Green Tower has not been an easy task. To get us to this milestone, of our first patients under its roof, there have been years of planning and an incredible amount of effort by many people. BGH’s staff have navigated a variety of challenges over the past few years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and yet they continue to provide the excellent care our community has grown to trust. Each member of the BGH team should be incredibly proud of their involvement, and as a community, we continue to thank them for their unwavering commitment to our health and well-being. With the expansion of services and 22 new beds, BGH will continue to recruit more healthcare heroes to support the high-quality care our community expects. It has taken a community to meet this incredible milestone. As friends, family and neighbours, we know that it doesn’t stop here… we will continue to strengthen the health and well-being of our community, together.
Sincerely,
Jim Cooper, Chair, Board of Directors
Nick Vlacholias, President and CEO
Dr. Michael Fuoco, Chief of Staff (Acting)
