Day Surgery
At Brockville General Hospital, our Day Surgery program has the expertise and technology to provide excellent outpatient surgery which allows you to go home the same day as your operation or procedure. Our healthcare team will observe you after your surgery to make sure that you have recovered and that it’s safe to leave the hospital.
You may have one escort during your time in Day Surgery and we encourage one parent to stay with a paediatric patient.
Location
Brockville General Hospital offers Day Surgery at 75 Charles St.
Before your surgery
Make sure that you follow any instructions that your doctor gave you. The night before your surgery, you should not eat or drink after midnight. You can bathe or shower beforehand but do not apply any cosmetics, nail polish, fragrances or deodorants before coming to the hospital. Do not wear your contact lenses as they may get lost or dry out and irritate your eyes.
Pre-operative assessments
You may have a pre-operative assessment at one of our clinics for tests, admission information and instructions. Our healthcare team will provide you with important information to help you prepare for your surgery, recovery and to discharge you safely from our hospital.
You must follow any procedures and complete any testing required to ensure your safety and to prevent any delays. These procedures allow us to identify and stop any problems before your surgery.
Bring your health card and your medication
Bring your Ontario Health Card and any medications that you take on a daily basis. Confirm with your doctor before you take any medications, even if they’re over-the-counter, on the day of your surgery.
Day of your surgery
On the day of your surgery, it’s important that you have your health card, bring your medication, and leave any valuables at home. Please remember you are responsible for informing your family and friends that you are staying in the hospital.
Leave your valuables at home
Leave any valuables at home, including your jewelry, large amounts of money and credit cards. You can bring a small amount of money for small expenses like parking.
After your surgery
Make sure that you’ve discussed what to expect after your surgery and your limitations with your doctor.
You should know and be familiar with:
- What you can eat;
- Your medication;
- Activity level and any exercises you need to do; and
- Whom to contact if you have any difficulty.
Have someone accompany you home
After day surgery, a responsible person must take you home. Please make sure to provide us with their contact information. It’s important that you’re not left alone for 24 hours following your surgery. Do not drive a car or take public transit after your surgical procedure.
