Julie’s Community Updates: October 23, 2026

This week, I am reminded that prevention remains one of the most important tools in healthcare, helping people stay healthier and reducing the need for more serious interventions later.

Prevention happens in many ways, from empowering people with information about their health to the work of dedicated teams who support safe, high-quality care every day.

In this week’s Community Update:

  • On October 21, the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation's latest MEDtalks session, Every Second Counts, drew a sold-out audience. I was pleased to attend and see so many community members come together to learn about stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. Events like this demonstrate the important role education plays in helping people make informed decisions about their health.
  • With respiratory illness season quickly approaching, I encourage everyone to take simple steps to protect themselves and those around them. Beginning October 26, free flu and COVID-19 shots will be available to the public at participating pharmacies, public health units and participating doctor and nurse practitioner offices.
  • Delivering safe, reliable healthcare is a shared effort. During the final week of October, we recognize several teams whose work supports our patients, families and community:
    • October 26-30 is Patient Safety Week. This week is an opportunity to reflect on the important role each of us plays in creating a safer healthcare experience for our patients and families
    • October 25-31 is Respiratory Therapist week. Respiratory therapists provide specialized care to patients with breathing and lung-related conditions across a wide range of clinical settings.
    • The last week of October is National Facilities Engineering Week. Our Facilities team plays an important role in supporting patient care by maintaining the buildings, equipment and systems that keep our hospital operating safely and effectively.
