Julie’s Community Updates: October 30, 2026

One of the privileges of my role is seeing firsthand the many ways people contribute to our community. This past week, that included celebrating local leaders, recognizing public service, and reflecting on the importance of supporting our neighbours as we head into the winter months.

Congratulations to Brockville’s Mayor-Elect Cameron Wales, along with all members of council. I look forward to working alongside our municipal and community partners in support of a healthy and thriving region.

As temperatures begin to drop, community organizations are preparing to support residents through the winter months. On November 1, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville’s Warming Centre will open at First Presbyterian Church, providing overnight support from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., seven days a week, through March 31.

Halloween takes place this Saturday and I encourage everyone to keep safety in mind while enjoying the festivities. As children head out to trick-or-treat, wearing reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight can help improve visibility after dark. Families should use designated crosswalks and remain alert near roadways, while drivers are reminded to slow down and exercise extra caution in residential neighbourhoods. Before treats are enjoyed, parents and caregivers should also take a moment to inspect them. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween.

Last evening, we had the privilege of celebrating our Long Service Award recipients. Together, we recognized team members who have dedicated between 20 and 45 years of service to Brockville General. These milestones reflect decades of caring for patients, supporting colleagues, and helping shape our organization. It was a meaningful opportunity to thank them for the lasting impact they have made in our hospital and community.

I also had the pleasure of attending the Young Professionals Network 40 Under 40 Awards last Friday. The event highlighted the talent, leadership, and community spirit that exists across our region. I was especially proud to see five members of the Brockville General team recognized among this year's recipients. Their accomplishments reflect the energy and commitment they bring to both our organization and the broader community.

As we look ahead to November, we will also recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Intimate partner violence affects individuals and families in every community, and raising awareness is an important step in helping people access support when they need it.

Through the Assault Response & Care Centre (ARCC), a program of Brockville General, survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence have access to compassionate, trauma-informed care and support services. Throughout November, ARCC will be sharing information and resources to help raise awareness of this important issue. To learn more about ARCC and the services available, visit the ARCC page on our website.
