Spooky patient meals take centre stage at the Great Plate Off

Spooky patient meals took centre stage as Compass One’s Great Plate Off returned to Brockville General. Four hospitals battled it out to see who could make the tastiest, and spookiest, patient meal.

“It was an honour to host the second annual Plate Off again; this event is such an amazing opportunity to bring together chefs from across the region," explained Jane, General Manager for Nutritional Services. “This year, teams from Brockville General, Cornwall Community Hospital, Kemptville District Hospital, and The Ottawa Hospital were challenged to make Halloween-inspired dishes using only ingredients available through the Compass order guide and they had to stay within a set budget.”

Using our retail kitchen and the unit serveries in the Donald B. Green Tower, the four teams each prepared a three-course meal for a panel of judges to assess. Meals were judged across a variety of criteria, including presentation, creativity, and accuracy to the theme.

After a close competition, the following prizes were awarded,

• Cornwall Community Hospital won Best Leading Main Entrée and the overall Great Plate-Off trophy.
• Kemptville District Hospital won the Excellence in Sugar and Spice award.
• The Ottawa Hospital won the Master of the Starter award.
• Brockville General was awarded a plaque to recognize their win from last year.

With Cornwall Community Hospital taking home the grand prize, their unique recipes will be shared with hospitals in the region for them to prepare for patient’s Halloween meal this year.
