TEST Mammography

The Mammography Department at Brockville General provides screening and diagnostic mammography services at our Charles Street site. Our accredited team of Medical Radiation Technologists and Radiologists is committed to delivering high-quality breast imaging in a supportive and professional environment.

A mammogram is one of the most effective tools available for detecting breast cancer early, often before symptoms are noticeable. Regular screening can help identify changes when treatment may be most effective.

 

If you are between the ages of 40 and 74 and have no current breast symptoms, you may be eligible for breast cancer screening through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).

A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is not required.

Once your information has been received, a member of our team will contact you to schedule your appointment.

Appointments are available Tuesday through Friday.

If you are experiencing breast symptoms, such as a breast lump, breast pain, nipple discharge, skin changes or changes in breast size or shape, please speak with your physician or nurse practitioner. These symptoms may require a diagnostic mammogram.

A referral from your healthcare provider is required for diagnostic mammography.

Your provider will send the referral to our Mammography Booking Office, and a member of our team will contact you to arrange an appointment.

To help ensure the best possible images:

  • Do not wear deodorant, powders, creams, lotions, or scented products on the day of your appointment
  • Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit
  • Bring your health card

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to register at the Central Registration Desk.

Once registered, you will be directed to the Mammography Department for your appointment.

If you arrive late, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

If you still have menstrual periods, you may find it more comfortable to schedule your mammogram at a time when your breasts are less tender.

Most mammogram appointments take less than 15 minutes to complete.

During the exam, each breast is briefly compressed between two plates to obtain clear images. Some people experience temporary discomfort during compression, but the compression lasts only a few seconds.

A Mammography Technologist will guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Your mammogram images will be reviewed by a Radiologist.

Results will be sent to your healthcare provider or communicated through the Ontario Breast Screening Program, depending on the type of appointment you attended.

Sometimes additional imaging is needed to obtain more information. Being contacted for additional imaging does not necessarily mean that a serious problem has been found.

If additional imaging is recommended, Brockville General's Bookings Department will contact you to arrange a follow-up appointment.

Brockville General offers secure online access to imaging records through PocketHealth Patient Sharing.

PocketHealth allows patients to:

  • View imaging records online
  • Download imaging records
  • Securely share imaging records with healthcare providers, family members or caregivers

PocketHealth offers the following plans:

  • Basic (Free)
  • Core ($29/year)
  • Unlimited ($49/year)

Applicable fees are paid directly to PocketHealth at the time of enrolment.

All plans include ongoing access to previously completed imaging exams, as well as new imaging completed after enrolment.
