Our Observership Program provides individuals with the opportunity to gain meaningful insight into clinical settings through short, approximately two‑day, shadow‑based experiences. Observers are welcomed into select areas of our organization to learn by watching healthcare professionals in their day‑to‑day roles. Observers do not participate in patient care.
Participation in this program requires that applicants independently secure their own preceptor before submitting an application. The hospital does not assist with matching observers to clinicians or identifying potential preceptors.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
This program is designed for learners seeking career exploration, academic enrichment, or a deeper understanding of healthcare practice.

To ensure you complete the correct documentation for your upcoming placement, review the table below to determine which type of check applies to your specific placement setting. These updated requirements are mandatory for all learners and must be completed prior to the start of your placement.

If you have any questions about which category your placement falls into or how to obtain the appropriate check, please contact the Education Coordinator for support.

High School Co-op Program

Brockville General Hospital is proud to support experiential learning opportunities for local high school students. Our High School Co‑op Program is designed for Grade 11 and 12 learners who are interested in exploring careers in healthcare, gaining hands-on experience, and developing workplace readiness skills.

Through co‑op placements across a variety of hospital departments, students have the opportunity to observe professionals in their daily work, build foundational knowledge, and learn in a real clinical or corporate environment.

Students interested in joining the program must begin by contacting their high school co‑op teacher, who coordinates all placements with Brockville General.

Brockville General works directly with high school co‑op leads to select and place students each semester. Placements occur twice per year:

  • Fall intake: September selection with an October start
  • Winter intake: February selection with a March start

These timelines ensure students have sufficient time to complete the required co‑op hours. At the start of each semester, co‑op teachers submit all required student documentation to the Brockville General Education Coordinator, who manages placement assignments and orientation.

Brockville General partners with local high schools to offer a limited number of co‑op placements each semester.

Guaranteed placement spots:

  • Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) – 2 placements
  • Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) – 2 placements
  • St. Mary Catholic High School – 2 placements

Potential additional placements (1 spot each):

  • South Grenville District High School
  • Athens District High School
  • Rideau District High School

Availability may vary depending on department capacity and program demand.

Placement opportunities change from semester to semester depending on staff availability and departmental needs. Historically, students have been hosted in a wide range of areas, including:

  • Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Diagnostic Imaging (DI)
  • Health and Safety
  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC)
  • Laboratory Services
  • Maintenance
  • Maternal–Child
  • Medical-Surgical
  • Professional Practice

Brockville General strives to match students with departments that align with their interests where possible, though placements cannot be guaranteed in advance. Placement locations will no longer be cycled through during the semester. Each student will be placed in a singular department for the duration of their placement.

  1. Student contacts their co‑op teacher to request an application and be considered for selection.
  2. Co‑op teacher submits required documentation to the Brockville General Education Coordinator.
  3. Education Coordinator confirms placements and provides the co‑op teacher with an orientation date.
    • Students will receive their hospital ID badge at orientation.
  4. Student emails their assigned preceptor with a brief introduction and resume and confirms first-day meeting instructions.

To participate in the program, students must have the following completed and submitted prior to placement:

Students should direct all initial questions to their high school co‑op teacher.

Educators or partner schools wishing to inquire about placements may contact the Brockville General Education Coordinator for additional details.
