Brockville General acquires former Commonwealth School for future redevelopment
Brockville General Hospital has finalized an agreement with the Upper Canada District School Board to acquire the former Commonwealth Public School, an important step which supports the hospital’s long-term redevelopment plans.
The acquisition reflects Brockville General’s commitment to planning for the future healthcare needs of Lanark, Leeds, and Grenville, ensuring the hospital is well positioned to serve a growing and evolving community.
“Our hospital has always risen to meet the needs of the community, and we do so by continually planning for the future,” said James Eastwood, Brockville General’s Board of Directors Chair. “This acquisition allows our teams to begin early planning for future redevelopment of our hospital site. Purchasing this large property immediately adjacent to the hospital is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and will allow the Brockville General to effectively provide enhanced care services to our patients."
“We’re happy that this site will transition to the hospital, where it will continue to serve the community,” said Jamie Schoular, Upper Canada District School Board Chair.
“We are grateful to the Upper Canada District School Board for recognizing the strategic importance of this location and for working collaboratively with us throughout this process,” added Julie Caffin, Brockville General President and CEO. "As our community is aware, Commonwealth has been in use by the United Counties as a warming centre during the winter. Brockville General will be taking possession of the school once the warming centre has closed.”
“I’m pleased that Brockville General Hospital is again stepping up to meet the future healthcare needs of our community with the acquisition of the former Commonwealth Public School,” said Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. “With this purchase completed, I look forward to continuing to work with Brockville General and other local healthcare partners on our plans to ensure patients are connected to care when and where they need it.”
Further details regarding redevelopment planning will be shared as they become available.
