Brockville General’s MRI project reaches major milestone

Brockville General Hospital’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) project reached a major milestone over the weekend of March 22-24 with the delivery and successful installation of the two specially designed building units. Brockville General is the first hospital in Ontario to use this innovative prefabricated modular building solution for its MRI suite.

The two building sections, each weighing approximately 110,000 pounds, arrived at the site early in the evening on March 22 after a 10-day, 1,700+ kilometre journey on two 130-foot tractor-trailers. Craning operations using a 550-ton crane took place throughout the day on March 23.

With the installation complete, the MRI suite will now be connected to hospital infrastructure such as electrical and plumbing. The next major milestone for the project is the arrival of the MRI scanner later in April. The project remains on track to have the MRI in operation this spring.

MRI imaging can help physicians provide early diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, often eliminating the need for other tests. This means faster and better care, ultimately improving an individual’s quality of life.
