The Nursing Alumnae of the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing meet regularly for social events, activities, memorials and reunions.

Nursing Alumnae membership is open to graduates of the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing. Members pay an annual fee of $10, which gives them access to our meetings, regular events and newsletter.

Meeting schedule

Meetings are held 6 times per year, usually on the second Monday of every second month. Occasionally, meetings are held in conjunction with social events.

Moments in time

The Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing trained highly qualified nurses from 1893 until the school closed in 1974. There are a number of important milestones in the school's history.

  • 1893: The first graduating class and first graduate, Isobelle Thomas.
  • 1906: Blanche Easton becomes Director of Nursing in North Western Ontario.
  • 1916: Sister Mary Nunn goes overseas to join the Imperial Service and is honoured with the Royal Red Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace.
  • 1923: The Nursing Alumnae is formed under the leadership of Maude Arnold.
  • 1939-1945: Some BGH Nursing Alumnae serve in World War II.
  • 1943: Dorothy Barret Maberley is the first BGH School of Nursing Graduate to receive a nursing degree in teaching.
  • 1949: Vera J. Preston is named Director of Nursing until her retirement in 1984.
  • 1971: Gary Yeo is the first male to enter the school and its last graduate. A total of five men graduated from the school of nursing.
  • 1974: The school closes after 81 years and a total of 1188 graduates.
